Answers

  1. Can I chat with more than one foreign buddy at a time?
  2. IM-Translate is a point to point application. However, you can open a conversation window for each buddy you'd like to chat with simultaneously. We are investigating methods to provide chat room translations.

  3. Can I use other Messenger features?
  4. Yes you can! We conducted extensive testing to insure that all native features of your Messenger application can be used while IM-Translate is on the job translating your instant messages.

  5. Can I talk via voice connection to my foreign buddy as I write my messages?
  6. Yes. We encourage you to do so to help you understand your buddy when he/she speaks in a language you're not fluent in. Since you can display both untranslated and translated text, having your buddy type a message in his/her language will both help you determine what he/she is saying in addition to giving you an interpretation in your own language. The interactivity of this can help you to learn a new language.

  7. When are you going to support additional languages?
  8. Right now we support translations between French, Spanish, and English. We're working to add additional languages as quickly as we can. Please check back often to see the languages we support, which are listed across the top of the web page.

  9. How can I invite my pen-pal to join me?
  10. After you have installed the software, establish a chat session with your buddy, then use the desktop (or Start menu) icon the installer has provided. You and your buddy can start using the application immediately. The proper translation software will be automatically downloaded to your computer.

For use with Yahoo Messenger, while the beta test is active, you and your pen-pal buddy will both need to install the IM-Translate application via the instructions on our Install IM-Translate web page. You can send your buddy the link to our pages via Messenger:

  11. How is IM-Translate different from other translators?
  12. IM-Translate is unique in that it seamlessly downloads to your computer to provide you the fastest, most interactive experience. Plus, as we release new versions you will automatically get the updated software, so you always get the best possible translations.

  13. Can I use IM-Translate to get translations for myself?
  14. We do not currently offer this feature but are considering doing so. If you'd like to use our instant message translation software to do your own quick translations, please let us know by emailing us at: marketing@im-translate.com

  15. Can IM-Translate remember my previous messages?
  16. No, IM-Translate does not remember your previous messages. There is no database, no collection, no memory of your messages in IM-Translate.

Our policy is to respect your information and privacy. We keep no record of the messages we translate for you.

  17. I have a different messenger application. What can I do?
  18. Be patient, as we are working to develop IM-Translate plugins for other instant messaging applications. Check back here at our site to find out what we have created.

You can also easily install Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger to communicate with a particular foreign buddy. We have a link to their installation pages at the upper-right of each of our web pages.

Don't miss the great fun of communicating across a language barrier!

  19. How can I close IM-Translate?
  20. Like any normal Windows application, the X button on the upper right corner of the IM-Translate display will close the activity.

  21. I have a problem I don't see an answer for here.
  22. If we haven't answered your question above, please send us an email at support@im-translate.com. We will try to address the problem and add an answer to the FAQ above as soon as we can.
